The new LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary features bold and exciting work from today's great artists and influential visionaries. Bringing together top galleries from around the world, the show creates a vibrant atmosphere that examines the present while formulating the future. The G2 Gallery’s booth featuring Clyde Butcher’s massive black and white prints will stand out as one that straddles the line between conservation and fine art photography. Just around the corner in January we will have the pleasure of introducing Clyde Butcher at the Gallery!

On Friday, January 20th from 6:30-9:00 we are having an Artist Reception. Join us and World Wildlife Fund in welcoming Florida's State Photographer Clyde Butcher. Complimentary valet, hors d'oeuvres and wine provided.

The next evening, Saturday January 21st from 7:00-9:00 is "Art Comes from the Heart" the presentation given by Clyde Butcher at The G2 Gallery that illustrates the path in his life that has led him in the direction of black and white landscape photography, and how that career path led him from California to Florida and into the conservation movement. The program will be followed with questions from the audience. A $5 donation at the door will directly support the World Wildlife Fund.

The G2 Gallery welcomes the community to come celebrate Holiday Festival. December 2, 2011 6:30pm - 9:30pm. This family event will include live music inside and out of the gallery, Santa and his elves, and yummy treats to celebrate the opening of two new exhibits: Nature LA: Oceanscapes by Nathanial Havholm, and Winter Wonderland featuring Justin Black and Jim
Stimson. Meet photographer Nathanial Havholm and discuss the genesis of his Oceanscapes series, inspired by the work of maritime writer Stephen Crane. Visit G2’s new Garage Gallery and see Winter Wonderland. Victoria Rowe and the Jazz will be playing classics, standards, and carols upstairs in G2’s main gallery with a full band including, piano, upright bass, drums and vocals. A live sax player will be on G2’s street corner at Abbot Kinney and Milwood to greet passersby with the Christmas spirit.

A $5 admission at the door will directly benefit the The G2 Gallery’s Third Annual 12 Stockings, 12 Days of Christmas fundraiser, which supports local and international non-profits working in the environment and animal welfare. The list of participants this year includes Audubon
California, Catalina Island Conservancy, Delta Society, Earthjustice, Environmental Media Association, Friends of Ballona Wetlands, Heal the Bay, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Coucil, Surfrider, Wildlife Alliance, and World Wildlife Fund.

Celebrating 40 Years of International Bird Rescue

Venice, CA—On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, The G2 Gallery will present Saving Cranes, an exhibition of photography focusing on the endangered Whooping Crane, that will benefit the work of the International Crane Foundation (ICF.) An opening reception will be held on Friday, August 26 from 6:30–9:00 pm with photographer Mike Sloat and a special presentation by ICF President & CEO Dr. Richard Beilfuss.

From a low of just 15 birds in 1941, the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock of Whooping Cranes—the last naturally occurring population of Whooping Cranes in the world—has recovered to its present population of approximately 280 birds. Today, water diversions affecting the cranes’ wintering grounds in the Guadalupe River basin threaten to decimate the flock’s main food source, blue crabs. The International Crane Foundation is working with partners to raise awareness and protect the fragile gulf ecosystem sustaining the Whooping Cranes and many other species. Dr. Richard Beilfuss, President and CEO of the International Crane Foundation, notes “The Whooping Crane is among the most iconic species of North America, a symbol of the struggle for survival. We believe a win-win solution can be found in the Guadalupe basin, by finding a balance between the upstream water needs for cities, agriculture and industry and the downstream waters that maintain healthy coastal wetlands for Whooping Cranes and the livelihoods of many people along the Gulf Coast. Mike’s images capture the stunning beauty of these wetlands and our country’s largest and most endangered bird—sights we hope will remain for generations to come.”

As pictured by photographer Mike Sloat, Saving Cranes reminds us of our interconnectivity with the environment, and the need to balance meeting human needs with those of the living world around us.

About Mike Sloat
Mike Sloat has always been concerned with flight. For 36 years, he served as a decorated career military pilot. Today, he is an aircraft Safety Inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration and channels his passion into photography, capturing winged creatures like the Whooping Crane. Mike's interest in photography began more than 40 years ago when he acquired his first Kodak Box Camera. He now utilizes an assortment of Nikon equipment including a D7000 for his digital work, and an F100 film camera for black and white infrared. Mike's images are a representation of his ideals not only in regard to nurturing our environment, but also out of respect for animals that are flying, walking, crawling or swimming. The G2 Gallery will premiere Catalina: The Wildlands at Your Doorstep, featuring the photography of Marc Muench, Jack Baldelli, and Carlos de la Rosa. Presented in partnership with the Catalina Island Conservancy, the images depict the land, sea and endemic species of Catalina Island. An opening reception with the artists and representatives of the Catalina Island Conservancy will be held Friday, July 8, 2011, from 6:30–9:00 pm.

Approximately 20 miles off Los Angeles’s coast and beyond Avalon’s quaint seaside charm lies the wild and rugged terrain of Catalina Island. Volcanic activity on the Pacific Ocean floor formed a chain of islands from which Santa Catalina emerged rocky, arid, and devoid of terrestrial life. Over time and through various means, Catalina Island was colonized by all manner of flora and fauna, forming its own unique ecosystem.

It is the mandate of the Catalina Island Conservancy to steward the land, protecting native species such as the Catalina Island fox and managing non-natives like the famed Catalina bison. The images featured in the exhibit will survey the flora, fauna, and wild vistas of the Island. "We are so pleased that The G2 Gallery has put together this exhibit that showcases the beauty of Catalina Island's wild places," said Ann Muscat, President and CEO of the Catalina Island Conservancy. "As the organization that is charged with protecting and restoring Catalina's 42,000-acre nature preserve and welcoming visitors to enjoy it, the breath taking images captured by these talented artists are an inspirational introduction to Catalina's exceptional natural resources."

About Marc Muench
An internationally renowned landscape photographer, Marc Muench has returned to Catalina Island over the years to explore its shores, canyons, mountain tops, and water to capture the spirit of the island with his camera. With eleven book titles, ESPN outdoor shows, and numerous magazine, calendar and poster titles, Marc’s style bridges the popular with the artistic. A third generation photographer, Marc’s career follows in the family tradition started by his grandfather Josef Muench and his father David Muench, both celebrated award winning landscape photographers as well. His most recent exhibition was titled Explorations at the Wildling Art Museum in Los Olivos, California.

About Jack Baldelli
Jack Baldelli’s first photography assignment was for his Riverside Junior High yearbook in l961. To date, his images have been exhibited at The University of Southern California, the California Science Center, Sea World of San Diego, the Natural History Museum of San Diego and the Catalina Island Conservancy. Jack’s career has taken him around the globe and he has lived overseas for close to 20 years. His numerous trips to the Antarctic continent over the past 21 years have been in various capacities as commercial diver; expedition lecturer, naturalist and zodiac driver; and underwater and topside photographer. Jack has been coming to Catalina Island since 1957. Since 2003 he has been a Volunteer Ranger and Photographer for the Catalina Island Conservancy.

About Carlos de la Rosa
Carlos de la Rosa is a scientist who uses photography to document his research in the field of natural resources conservation. Looking through a lens became a new way of seeing when he discovered a world of tiny creatures under a loupe at the age of 7. This early intellectual curiosity eventually led to a career observing the natural world, in particular aquatic insects. Carlos came to the United States from his native Caracas, Venezuela to complete a Ph.D. in ecology at the University of Pittsburgh and went on to discover, explore and learn about ecosystems in Central America, the Amazon, the Galapagos Islands and other remote wilderness areas in the United States and Europe. As the Conservation and Education Chief Officer with the Catalina Island Conservancy, Carlos oversees projects and programs that delve into natural history, science, and the human context in which conservation takes place.

WHO: Nature photographer Kristen Westlake will give a talk on her artistic practice at The G2 Gallery, a green art space specializing in nature and wildlife photography.

WHAT: Wisconsin native Kristen Westlake will come to The G2 Gallery to give a talk on the way her images come together in concert with the nature she is capturing. She states: “I don’t take pictures, I make them. Taking implies the hurried feeling of rushing in and gathering up something that is not mine, Making is co-creating with my surroundings, spending the time to get to know the land and Her creatures, and experiencing first hand the dance of life, by dancing with it.”

Venice, CA—On Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 6:30 pm, The G2 Gallery will invite members of the community to celebrate its Second Anniversary with a gala celebration.

In the two years since opening in March 2008, The G2 Gallery has premiered 16 environmentally themed exhibitions with over 40 photographers, including Frans Lanting, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Robert Turner, and Galen Rowell. Dan and Susan Gottlieb, owners of The G2 Gallery, believe in supporting art and the environment through photography. Upholding a strong commitment to nature and wildlife, The G2 Gallery will continue to actively support and collaborate with major international and essential local eco- and animal welfare charities, such as Conservation International, Heal the Bay, and Best Friends Animal Society. Looking forward, Director Jolene Hanson says: “Year three at The G2 Gallery will see bigger shows with some of the most exciting photographers in the field today; the triumphant return of a world-renowned artist we’ve worked with in the past; and an increased focus on fine art photography through our Nature LA series.”

The G2 Gallery Presents Nature LA: Nathanial Havholm
Solo Show of Photography features Images from Icy Bay, Alaska, Opens February 2, 2010

Venice, CA—On Tuesday, February 2, 2010, The G2 Gallery will present Nature LA: Nathanial Havholm, a solo exhibition of photography. This exhibition will be a part of The G2 Gallery’s Nature LA series. Nature LA brings into focus the work of individual photographers based in the Los Angeles area whose passion is shooting in nature. The exhibitions rotate regularly to showcase up-and-coming photographers from Los Angeles.
For his exhibition at the G2 Gallery, Nathanial will show a series of landscapes that encapsulate that magnificence and unique beauty of remote Icy Bay, Alaska. Originally shot while on location for an assignment with the “Discovery Channel” in late 2007, Nathanial’s viewfinder reveals a still world of ice sculptures in the sand accessible by bush plane. Icy Bay has been revealed in the past 100 years by the rapid retreat of the tidewater glaciers of the region, the Guyot, Tyndall, and Yahtse.
An Artist’s Reception will be held Friday, February 5, 2010.

Nathanial Havholm is an LA based professional photographer with over 12 years experience. Nathanial’s pursuit of photography has its roots in small town Ohio, where he spent his childhood. Upon receiving an undergraduate degree from Guilford College, Havholm moved to New York City and then to Los Angeles to establish himself as a photographer. In 2003, Nathanial was featured in his first solo show, “Transience”, at Photofighter Studio and has continued to exhibit in the LA area and in his hometown. Over the past decade Nathanial has been a world traveller capturing the splendor with a Contax 35mm, 6X9 rangefinder, and most recently, a Canon 5D.

Garden Talk Will Cover the Principles of Sustainable Garden Design For Drought Prone Climates on Friday, January 22 at 7:30 pm

Venice, CA—On Friday, January 22, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., The G2 Gallery will present “Beautiful Gardens for a Dry Place,” a talk on sustainable garden design given by Alison Hurst, principal designer and owner of Grow Garden Design. The State of California is in the midst of a severe drought that has been ongoing for 3 years. A specialist in drought tolerant garden designs, Alison will dispel the myth that dry gardens are harsh and barren, and discuss the many benefits of gardens that are sustainable and incorporate a true sense of place in our desert by the sea.
Inspired by art house director Derek Jarman's unconventional and iconic garden in Dungeness, Kent in her home country of England, Alison began investigating the dry garden concept more than 15 years ago. The same principles that applied to the difficult climate of Dungeness are transferable to Southern California’s landscape.
“Beautiful Gardens for a Dry Place” will be the first in The G2 Gallery’s Garden Lecture Series in the run up to Where the Wild Things Grow, a comprehensive exhibition on trees, flowers, wetlands and forests, opening March 23, 2010.

About Carl Richards
Carl Richards is a native New Yorker who relocated to Marina del Rey, in the 1990’s. Carl began his career as the general manager of a fashion-advertising agency working closely with art directors and photographers covering photo shoots. He went on to become an Assistant Director/Producer for the film industry, giving him the opportunity to work with academy-award winning cinematographers, and instilling in him a deep appreciation for the use of lighting in composing an image.

The G2 Gallery Presents Borderlands Photo Exhibition Revealing Environmental Impact of the US-Mexico Border Wall
Expedition by International League of Conservation Photographers Fellows Showcased in this Traveling Exhibition Appearing at The G2 Gallery January 5-February 7, 2010
Venice, CA—On Tuesday, January 5, 2010, The G2 Gallery will present Borderlands, a group photo exhibition organized by the International League of Conservation Photographers that records the environmental impact of the border wall erected. Participating photographers include Jack Dykinga, Wendy Shattil, Christina Mittermeier, and Ian Shive among others.
The images that comprise the Borderlands exhibit are the result of a three and a half week R.A.V.E. (Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition) instigated by the ILCP. The Borderlands R.A.V.E. took place in the first months of 2009 along a 2,000 mile stretch of land around the border between the United States and Mexico. The photographs produced by the Borderlands R.A.V.E. featured at The G2 Gallery document the environmental impact that the border fence has had on the land and the inhabitants of the region, in particular the land and the wildlife that inhabit it.

About the International League of Conservation Photographers & R.A.V.E.
The International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) is a consortium of professional photographers, known as Fellows, who have demonstrated the highest skills in photography, outstanding ethical standards in the capture, manipulation and captioning of images, and a sustained commitment to conservation. The ILCP’s mission is to further environmental and cultural conservation through photography.
A Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition, or R.A.V.E., is one of the primary initiatives utilized by the ILCP. Conceived to address the challenges of modern conservation, R.A.V.E. aims to achieve a full visual and media assessment in a short period of time by means of a multi-disciplinary team that includes several specialized ILCP photographers (landscape, wildlife, macro, camera trapping, portraiture), writers and cameramen. Their job is to bring back a comprehensive portrait of a conservation issue or threat in a very short period of time.
The ILCP is helmed by president and photographer Cristina Mittermeier, and includes among its fellows such photographic luminaries as Frans Lanting, Thomas D. Mangelsen, Robert Glenn Ketchum, and Michele Westmorland.

They have offered numerous composition competitions and commissioned many new chamber music works for performance. In their seven-year history they have implemented new approaches to performance in a range of venues from the Jazz Bakery, the Culver Hotel, Club Tropical, local art galleries, private homes, churches, libraries and coffee houses. These performances have developed into regular concert series in multiple communities in Southern California, including Culver City, Long Beach, South Pasadena, and West L.A. Venice, CA – On Friday, August 28, 2009, the G2 Gallery will present The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet. The all acoustic Gonzalo Bergara Quartet plays a modern variant of 1930's Django Reinhardt-inspired Gypsy Jazz. Composer and lead guitarist Bergara mixes cascades of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina and is supported by an ace clarinetist and a honed rhythm section. Bergara is fiery and focused, while the hard-swinging band takes the audience for a ride.

The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet is formed by Gonzalo Bergara on lead acoustic guitar, Rob Hardt (Strunz And Farah)on clarinet and tenor sax, Jeffrey Radaich on rhythm guitar and Brian Netzley on upright bass.

On August 13th, the G2 Gallery will welcome Dr. Temple Grandin to discuss how animals experience the world. Dr, Grandin is promoting her new book, Animals Make Us Human. Some of the topics to be discussed in her lecture are animal emotions and how animals think in pictures.

Known to many for her work designing Livestock and Animal Handling Facilities Dr. Grandin is also inarguably the most accomplished and easily recognized adult with autism in the world. She has appeared on numerous television talk shows including Larry King Live, Te Today Show and 20/20 and been written up in just about every major publication ranging from Time and People magazine to U.S. News and World Report and The New York Times.

About Dr. Temple Grandin
Dr. Temple Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Temple Grandin obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College in 1970. In 1974 she was employed as Livestock Editor for the Arizona Farmer Ranchman and also worked for Corral Industries on equipment design. In 1975 she earned her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University for her work on the behavior of cattle in different squeeze chutes. Dr. Grandin was awarded her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University.

She has done extensive work on the design of handling facilities. Half the cattle in the U.S. and Canada are handled in equipment she has designed for meat plants. Other professional activities include developing animal welfare guidelines for the meat industry and consulting with McDonalds, Wendy’s International, Burger King, and other companies on animal welfare.

Following her Ph.D. research on the effect of environmental enrichment on the behavior of pigs, she has published several hundred industry publications, book chapters and technical papers on animal handling plus 45 refereed journal articles in addition to seven books. She currently is a professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University where she continues her research while teaching courses on livestock handling and facility design. Her book, Animals in Translation was a New York Times best seller and her book Livestock Handling an Transport, now has a third edition which was published in 2007. Other popular books authored by Dr. Grandin are Thinking in Pictures, Emergence Labeled Autistic, and Animals Make us Human.

Eco-Gallery Presents Film Dealing with Critical Environmental Issue on July 31, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Venice, CA —Friday, July 31, 2009 at 7:00 pm, the G2 Gallery will present sneak peak clips of the upcoming documentary film The Vanishing of the Bees. The evening will include a question and answer session with filmmakers George Langworthy and Maryam Henein and is a fundraiser for the film, which is currently in postproduction. The evening will also include a silent auction benefitting the film.

The Vanishing of the Bees takes a piercing investigative look at the economic, political and ecological implications of the worldwide disappearance of the honeybee. The documentary examines our current agricultural landscape and celebrates the ancient and sacred connection between man and honeybee. The film also highlights the positive changes that have resulted due to a tragic phenomenon known as “Colony Collapse Disorder.” To empower the audience, the documentary provides viewers with tangible solutions they can apply to their everyday lives. The Vanishing of the Bees unfolds as a dramatic tale of science and mystery, illuminating the greater meaning surrounding the relationship between humankind and Mother Earth.

This screening is a part of G2 Gallery’s concert and lectures series. All G2 Gallery events are open to the public. A $10 suggested donation at the door is appreciated.

G2 Gallery to Host Best Friends Animal Society Fundraiser
Eco-friendly Gallery Continues its Support of Animal Rescue Organizations

Venice, CA—On Saturday, July 18, at 6:30 pm, the G2 Gallery will host a fundraiser for Best Friends Animal Society. The evening will include a silent auction.
Best Friends Animal Society was established in the late 1980’s to find homes for the “unadoptable” abandoned and abused stray cats and dogs of the world. Since its inception, Best Friends has led a grassroots effort that has reduced the number of pets destroyed each year from 17 million to 5 million, and they are determined to exceed this record. At its sanctuary in Utah, Best Friends provides a home to approximately 2,000 dogs, cats and other animals who receive special care and are either placed in homes, or live out their days in an atmosphere of love with Best Friends.

This event coincides with the exhibition Paws at the G2 Gallery. Known for bringing images of wildlife to the public, G2 Gallery’s latest exhibition looks at the animals we bring into our homes as pets. Photography by Harry Giglio, Melinda Lerner, Genaro Molina, and Sharon Montrose will be on display in the gallery, as well as bronzes by Audrey Lynne Cook and hand carved wood sculpture by Norton Latourelle. Proceeds from Paws will benefit Best Friends Animal Society. The exhibition will run through August 9, 2009.

Best Friends Animal Society is guided by a simple philosophy: kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early days, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year. Despite the commitment of shelter workers to the animals in their care, the conventional belief was that little could be done to lower that terrible number. INCA: Music of Peru

Come to G2 to experience this colorful array of music from Peru and the Andes. The evening will showcase a variety of regional influences, including coastal Hispanic music, African rhythms, and native Amazonian and ancient Incan sounds. The instrumentation is unique to these areas; woodwinds, strings, percussion and vocals are all featured during the show. Recently INCA's music was featured in South Park's "Pandemic" and "Pandemic II" episodes.

Known as a prolific writer and adventurer, Galen Rowell's emergence as an internationally recognized photographer is marked by his first appearance in National Geographic in 1974. In the years to follow, Galen would make numerous contributions to the publication, as well as publishing 18 books of his own. His works document his travels, offering keen insight into the societal and environmental impact being wrought on people and lands around the globe. In 2002 Galen's life was cut short when a private plane carrying him, his wife Barbara, and two friends crashed near the town of Bishop, where the Rowells made their home.

Photographer Gets "Cold Feet"

New Show at G2 Gallery Examines Arctic Photos through the Eyes of a Painter

J.J. L’Heureux is an accomplished abstract painter, collage artist, world traveler, environmental lecturer, published author and certified docent at the San Francisco Zoo. On February 17, 2009, J.J. L’Heureux displays another facet of her gifted repertoire, environmental photographer, as she opens Cold Feet, her new exhibit at the G2 gallery.L’Heureux takes an intimate look at a single region, Antarctica, and specifically one family of imperiled creature, the Penguin, providing insight into the lives of penguins through her photos and observations. L’Heureux explains the body of work:

"These photographs are intended to be a series by themselves. I like that the photographs convey an entirely different sense of the spirit of Antarctica, the wind and the cold than that of my paintings. I also like myself as cameraperson who had to exercise patience and direct involvement in taking the photos. It is a chore to tote the gear over miles of ice and set-up to take a family portrait of Emperor penguins in a place nearly never visited by people. Except for the sounds of the rookeries and the wind, there is a complete absence of industrial sound. Photographs lack sound or any suggestion of it. It is as if each scene has been encapsulated and frozen in crystal pure ice."

The show follows J.J. L’Heureux’s seventh trip to Antarctica, this time returning from New Zealand’s Sub Antarctic Islands.

Incapacitated by rheumatoid arthritis at an early age L’Heureux moved to New York and began to educate herself by reading books and visiting museums while seeking a cure for her condition. The result of these studies was the conclusion that she could make a living creating art. The subsequent years found L’Heureux’s moving to the west coast to develop her artistic talents. Becoming a docent for the San Francisco Zoo led to her traveling to Africa, South America, Galapagos Islands and North America to study the animals in their natural habitats.
J.J’s many credentials include attending the San Francisco Art Institute, The Parsons School of Design and a year’s course studying with the San Francisco Zoological Society.

Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World

A traveling photography exhibit on display at the G2 Gallery from January 6 to February 15, 2009, with an opening reception on January 9, 6-9 pm.

The Irreplaceable campaign brints together four distinct groups -- from the worlds of art, justice, science, and faith -- to highlight the diversity of life we must protect from climate change.

Climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. Scientists predict that global warming will become a leading cause of species extinction over the next several decades. As we work to address the impacts of global warming on humans -- rising sea levels, destructive storms, heat waves, increased disease risks and pollution -- we also need to protect imperiled species from a warming world.

The Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World campaign is a partnership of faith, science, justice and art to educate policymakers and the public about the impacts of flobal warming on wildlife. We do this through the beauty and power of images combined with the inspiration and knowledge from science, religion and conservation law. We believe this diverse partnership will show that we can work together toward a common goal.

Irreplaceable features photos of some of the world's top nature photographers including such talent as Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting, Galen Rowell, Michele Westomorland, Kevin Schafer, Paul Nicklen, Jowl Sartore and Brian Skerry. From the icy tundras in the Arctic to humid wetlands in the Everglades, these photographers have captured the wonder and movement of plants and animals that call our country home.

The Irreplaceable traveling photo exhibit will feature guest speakers and events as it tours across the country, ending in Washington DC in spring 2009. The goals: to educate the public about how climate change is threatening species -- and to show our policymakers we care deeply about the fate of irreplaceable wildlife.
